TATA IPL 2024: Deshpande's 4-Wicket Haul Propels CSK to 78-Run Win Over SRH
Chennai Super Kings, led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's stellar 98 and Daryl Mitchell's 52, bounced back from two consecutive losses with a commanding 78-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. After setting a formidable total of 212/3, CSK's fast bowler Tushar Deshpande shone with a superb four-wicket haul, including three crucial wickets in the Power-play, finishing with IPL-best figures of 4-22. This impressive bowling display ensured that SRH never posed a threat in the chase, as they were bundled out for 134 in 18.5 overs.
Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman claimed two wickets each, while Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur secured one scalp each for CSK. This significant win marks CSK's 50th IPL victory at Chepauk, propelling them from sixth to third place on the points table. They are now level on 10 points with SRH, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Capitals.
Chasing 213, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma hit three quick boundaries before Deshpande’s triple strikes derailed the SRH chase upfront. On his slower wide ball, Head holed out to deep point. Impact Player Anmolpreet Singh was undone by late movement and gave a leading edge to extra cover. Abhishek Sharma was next to fall, undone by a slower short ball which he sliced to point as SRH reached 53/3 at the end of power-play.
CSK continued to put pressure on SRH when Nitish Kumar Reddy top-edged a pull to M.S. Dhoni off Ravindra Jadeja, followed by Matheesha Pathirana bowling a magnificent yorker to take out Aiden Markram’s middle stump. Such was the tight grip held by CSK bowlers that SRH could hit only three boundaries in the middle overs.
Pathirana struck once more as Heinrich Klaasen failed to elevate a low full toss and was caught at long-on, while Shardul Thakur induced Abdul Samad to hit straight to long-off. Deshpande claimed his fourth wicket as Pat Cummins found the fielder at long-on, and Mitchell completed his fifth catch of the game as Shahbaz Ahmed's shot landed straight into his hands at square leg. In the 19th over, Moeen Ali took a good low catch at extra cover off Jaydev Unadkat to wrap up SRH's innings, sealing a comprehensive victory for CSK despite considerable dew on the outfield during the second innings.
